The scene was popular because she wasn't wearing any underwear, not the fact that she crossed her legs.

It's not because of the movie. When I was young (in the 70's), it was one of the few accepted ways for a woman to sit. A woman was looked at in a bad light - "loose" - if she left her legs uncrossed. In generations prior to mine, many men crossed their legs as well. Most men do not sit this way any more. It's considered by many to be "feminine".

Part of the reason women crossed their legs may have been that they used to wear dresses all the time. Leave your legs uncrossed, and the world gets a show....

Some of that changed in the 60's, when women rebelled against wearing dresses, etc.

Crossing how? Indian style, or like when you cross one knee over the other? Sorry, I didn't see the movie.....I cross knee over knee, partly from how I was raised, and partly b/c it's comfortable. When I do Indian style, and I'm around other people, it's more a feeling of being comfortable with the people I am around.
