Last saturday night I was in a car with my friends, we were all intoxicated on illegal substances, Joey who was pretty 'spaced out' at the time drove through a red light and we collided with another car.

We were travelling pretty fast at the time, we didnt slow down at all before impact, neither did the car we hit, he spun around, took out a traffic light and ended up halfway into a shop, while we carried on down the road about 20 metres before hitting a tree, everyone is ok, just a few cuts and bruises, there was a lot of damage to the cars and the shop.

Now the police arrived and took statements, there were no other witnesses, it was very early in the morning. Not wanting to admit to anything, we said we went thru the green, as did the other driver obviously.

The police breath tested everyone, we all passed, but the other driver failed. Because its his word against ours, he has been charged, the fault has been put on him.

Should I own up? Should I tell on my friend?

No, definitely not, count yourself lucky and leave it alone. In fact, it is the other driver's fault, as he was intoxicated, and no one is supposed to drive drunk. If the police aren't smart enough to get you on anything, then that's there fault, not yours.

Withholding evidence is a serious crime. Basically you ARE a witness because you were not driving. If the cars are at the impound lot of the police station then there might be damning evidence inside the vehicle that will show that your friend was not within his faculties while at the wheel.

I’d get with the police as long as I had an attorney at my side. Do not admit ANY fault of your own. Be ready for your friends to find out that it was you who ratted them out. Not a fun situation.. Have your attorney get you immunity from anything involved.

Have the police state that it was them that talked to you first and you had to fess up. Like they were doing a follow-up on the accident and confronted you or something. See if that will fly with the police and your attorney…

Personally you might be doing your friends a favor. Next time they decide to drive while being high it might not be a building they destroy. Imagine if your friend does this again and he kills a family?

You could have prevented it..

Your first obligation is to be true to yourself, not your friend. Friends are going to come and go in your life. You, on the other hand, are always going to have to live with yourself. You obviously know what the right thing to do is in this situation. You may want to consider telling all of your friends what you are going to do because your friends might be wanting to do the same thing. All you can do is tell the truth. What happens after that is out of your hands, but at least you will be able to sleep at night and respect yourself the next morning. Good luck to you.

Take the same punishment, it is not fair to let him shoulder
all the blame.........................................................................................

I could also say stop doing drugs, stop messing around etc.
but if you are a young adult you already know that, and your
parents should not be the one to smack you in the head,
you should have the self discipline to do that yourself.................

own up and take the Porridge....with him.......................................
