This is kind of a tough one because a couple of the areas are arguing with each other about who actually is a country! But the proper count is probably either 52 or 53 or 54 depending on who is counting!
There has just been some news recently about whether "Western Sahara" is going to be recognized as a country or not. And, are you counting the Canaries and Cape Verde as part of Africa or not?
