Yes, it is quite possible that the miscarriage happened because of her hypothyroidism. I had friend who was hypothyroid and miscarried too. On her most recent pregnancy she found a new doctor who tested her thyroid levels every 6 weeks, keeping her morning TSH below 2.0. She just had a 7 pound healthy baby girl.

The thyroid hormone is not going to hurt the baby. If she doesn't take it, she could miscarry again. Keep tabs on her TSH, making sure its around 1.0 and that she always tests first thing in the morning. You may want to aslk that a free t4 and free t3 be done too, as they are very helpful in determing her T4 and T3 levels.

The doctors only know that Hypothyrodism is caused because the thyroid gland doesn't function properly but have no idea what is cause that makes the gland not perform properly. TSH drops mainly because of poor metabolism, its better to do some morning exercise then taking that drug.
The drug use to treat Hypothyrodism decreases calcium from the bones and the doctors advice to take 3 tablets is a bit questionable. I suggest you take the advice from a very expert doctor as your wife has already had a miscarriage.

I had a hyper thyroid when preg. with 2nd son and on PTU (10 pills a day), and they made me slowly get off it, because it could cause thyroid problems with baby. I'd double check with ob/gyn to make sure, if it is ok or not to be on these meds.
