a) Do you have a lot of time and b) can you drive? What you could do (should do) is if you have 2 or 3 weeks, rent a car on one side of the country and drive to the other. You'll see an America you never read about in the foreign newspapers or see in Hollywood movies. And you'll probably meet some pretty decent and friendly people along the way.
If you are on more of a budget (time and money) than you should probably hit some of the bigger cities or natural landmarks. If you want to visit just the East Coast, you can see Boston, NY, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington DC all via train. They are not that far apart and you can just head down the East coast and see them pretty easily.
For most of the rest of the country, you're going to need to fly. Florida, Chicago, Vegas, LA, San Francisco, Seattle or even Hawaii. Those are all pretty popular with foreign visitors.
I guess it bears repeating that the US is an incredibly large country, and you can take a lifetime and still not visit all 50 states. Many foreigners make fun of Americans for not travelling overseas, but many Americans feel they still have so much to see here at home.
What kind of things do you like? Buildings, cities, theater--moutains, valleys, trees, oceans? There is a lot ot see so give us a better idea and we'll try to find some more things for you.

My favorites are Washington, DC, New York City, and San Francisco. DC has tons of things to do... memorials, museums, etc. A lot of it is free. New York City is, well, New York City! There's the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, the Empire State Building, etc. Warning though - it is pretty expensive. San Francisco is, in my opinion, the most beautiful city in the US. It's right on the water, with rolling hills and gorgeous bridges. It's a long way from SF to New York or DC, so it may not be practical to do all 3 in one trip.

What exactly do you mean by "the USA"? You have 50 states to choose from. There are dozens and dozens of beautiful places to visit, from Seattle to Miami, from Los Angeles to New York. Have a nice trip!
