I personally prefer Resident Evil 2 because you can play as 2 characters, and you get to see the game from each character's perspective. What you do with 1 character affects the other character.
Code Veronica and RE4 were also great games.

So far the best one is Resident Evil 4. It was a complete reinvention of the series and blew everyone away. Check out gamerankins.com for critic ratings on all games in the series. If you're looking for an old school game in the series there's always RE1 for PS1 or GC. I would reccomend the GC version. But RE2 or 3 are more popular and obvioulsy improved upon the original. It kind of depends on the consoles you have available to you. RE2 is my favorite of the classics but 4 is by far the best one. It's a gretest hits for PS2 so it would also only cost $20.00.

Definitely the first one. Its Japenese Version really rocks while US version of the game is good also especially the Director's Cut. I think the "factor" of Resident Evil is alive in the hearts of horror and suspense games enthusiats unlike the newer games in the series. But I would also like to say that the worst game in the series is the Gun Survivor title.
