this is the atomic model of the oxygen atom
the electronic configuration of Oxygen is 2,6.....which means that it needs two more electrons ....thus the two oxygen atoms shair a pair of electrons......this sharing is called the double covalent bond or simply double bond...........................

because oxygen is a diatomic molecule, meaning it cannot exist as an atom. Therefore, to make the molecule stable, each oxygen needs two more electrons. To do this, they need to make a double covalent bond. With a covalent dobule bond, a stable octet will be obtained between each oxygen.

Well, oxygen has a valency of 2, because it has 6 electrons in it's outer shell, when it needs 8 to occupy it's outer shell fully.
Therefore, when it bonds with another oxygen atom to form an oxygen molecule, it shares two pairs of electrons. Then, both atoms have 8 electrons in their outer shell, and everyone is happy!

Becauz it involves sharing of two pairs of electrons among the atoms.
In nitrogen, three pairs of electron are shared so its called a triple bond. In chlorine one pair of electron is shared so its called single bond. etc .....
