As per ICC Ranking as well as in the balance of the team and team strength, South Africa is the best at present. However, the best can also be defeated by teams of low ranking. Hence it does not always means that the best can win all the time. South Africa who had beaten pakistan convincinglhy during their tour to South Africa has been beaten by Pakistan in the warm up match.

No, certainly not on these slow and low wickets.

South Africa may trouble the best sides on fast and bouncy wickets, but on slow wickets india, srilanka and pakistan (sub continental teams) are too good for them, unlike Australia which would still remain the favourite, no matter what the conditions. Isnt it??

South Africa's main strength is their Pace Battery, with the likes of pollock, nitini, nel. They have played a huge rule in their success over the last few series. But this time they are playing on slow wickets which wont help their strength and even they dont have a good genuine spinner.
Their batting is nothing more than, smith, kallis and gibbs. Other teams have a far good batting lineup than that of south africa. Even they are poor playing the spin bowlers.

According to the ICC ODI Rankings for teams, South Africa has overtaken Australia, but South Africa won vital points by beating India and Pakistan convincingly, but at home (Note that both are 4th and 5th ranked teams, and not used to bouncy tracks). I feel they reached there by default.
Australia were nicely placed, they were 5 points clear. But, alas, they lost thrice, once to NZ, twice to ENGLAND, then lost the last series 3-0. This was a great blow for them, and lost 8 points in the process, reducing them to 3 points below South Africa.

According to the ICC world rankings they are, but most of the experts, (including one-eyed Australian commentators i might add) believe Australia is the best and will win the World Cup.

No! I think Australia is still the best cricket team at the moment.
Sri Lanka is capable of springing an upset and get into the final.

Though they are a good team they somehow find a way to lose.at a critical stage.
Let us see what trick they have this time.
Moreover this may not be their hunting ground.
