YES! Not only have I heard of it, I think it is absolutely brilliant, and its designers should receive an award for it!

I have climbed Mount Everest on it, visited tiny little islands, with even tinier villages on them, that don't even show up on the view of the sea until you zoom in. I have visited childhood homes and schools, and been to places I never even knew existed.

One point:- if you zoom in too close on a small house, for instance, you won't see many details, but the shape is clear and you can spin the site N,S,E or W to see it from the front, back, side etc.

I have been shown EXACTLY what route to take from one place to another in my own city; where to turn left/right, which turnoff etc etc, with moving indicators leading the way.

I have even "hovered" over the house where someone I love lives. The satellite imagery is not live, so surveillance isn't a problem.

Once you learn how to play with the VERY simple ways zooming in and out of the biggest or tiniest of places, and how to tilt the Earth at whim, it is an extraordinary site to play on for while. I almost bawled at my own stupidity at the beginning, when I had given up, thinking it wasn't what it was cracked up to be. Something made me go back another time, and it was suddenly clear.

Yes, it is fun to see your own house and street, etc, from any height you choose; in fact that's the only reason I thought Google Earth would be cool to have; but if you leave it at that, you will have missed out on a very different and fascinating program.

If nothing else, it gives you an entirely different perspective on the size of the world, and it is hard for your sense of proportion to remain the same after you have played with it for any length of time.

A small investment in effort pays BIGTIME in rewards. (and no, I have nothing to do with Google ~ never even had a computer 'til 3months ago, honestly)

So ~ don't listen to the "naysayers," ~ try it for yourself; I don't think you will regret it, that's for sure!

Damn, this was an awfully long answer......got a bit carried away........

I think it's great fun. You can zoom down on your home, and then pan right across the globe and zoom down on a friend or relative's home in another country? Who would have thought this was possible 20 years ago.

Just recently in Sydney, someoneone was flying planes over Sydney to take new more detailed photos of the city to put into Google Earth.

I suppose some people think that each view is current, but it's not THAT good. I remember seeing areas blanketed by snow when in the middle of summer. So a lot of the views are out of date. Who knows when ones of Iraq and North Korea were taken?

I think its a great free download.... its perhaps not as good a mapper as some others on the web, but if you live in a place where the photo quality is good, you will be amazed to see what your neighborhood looks like from space... I could make out my car in my driveway (kinda creepy actually) It has lots of neat special features for a free download.... you can cruise through a virtual Manhatan Island or fly through the grand canyon, plus it has tie-ins to web cams all over the world, so you can watch what is going on in New Deli, India in almost real time. There's cool National Geographic extras too. I recommend it highly for a great time killer.

Yes I have and it's one of the best of the type. The angle of view can be changed making a fly over much more interesting. Check out WINDOWS LIVE LOCAL. It has a feature that allows you to change from satellite to aerial (birds eye) photography for many but not all areas. After you've switched to that mode you can change the direction of view. With this feature I can see my car in the driveway. I think you'll enjoy it. http://local.live.com

Hey there,
You can download Google Earth for free here http://j.mp/1p6gAwY

Google Earth is a kind of 3D interactive atlas. You’ll be able to see what every corner of the world looks like.

Cheers.

Dentistry ... By your wording, I can't be sure whether you're asking what it is or whether YOU recently discovered it and you're telling us to try it.

Yes, I have enjoyed using it. When you properly combine the Google Earth interface along with other sources of high-resolution photography, you get a really powerful military studies tool.

Yes.

I work in the communications industry at the present time and use it all the time to check streets and locations for design work for new fiberoptic design to serve customers. Also use many local county and municipality aerial mapping systems (gis) sites for measuring distances and to give an excellent referencing system for permitting and detail work.

It's a great map service and the expensive version lets you see actual images of things on the ground. You can also zoom in and out and change the viewing angle. But, like everythng else, it costs....
