if you read creative visualisation by shakti gawain, she states that visualisation doesn't have to be 'visual'. you can just be thinking about something.

some people are 'visual' people, others are not. the important thing is your feeling rather than your head or eyes.

I used to be a 3D graphic artist. and when given a project IE. a horse that could be manipulated in a 3D world. Almost as soon as I started to create it, I already had a very strong (actual) vision in my mind as to what the finished item would look like and it was like tracing the image from my mind onto the screen.
Towards the end the horse could look like a tangle of lines (remember on the screen you can actually see through the horse) so there are thousands of lines making up the horse.
But somehow my mind was able to tell which of the lines were on my side and which were on the far side of the horse (Don't ask me how. I don't know) and in my minds eye I could actually put a skin and colour on to this tangle of lines.
Once when asked how easy it was to do I said it's a bit like knitting fog.
I was self taught and felt very nervous when I started to work with a team of tried and tested professionals. But after being on a computer at the office for a few hours found myself surrounded by these same pros asking how I did it. The answer to this is I still don't know.
I probably have the imagination of a lung fish so that is not the answer.
I suggest you break the thing you are trying to visualise down to its component parts. Start with simple things like a ball or a candle and work up from there, and pretty soon you will almost be able to feel the items texture.

you feel it- you see bits and pieces of it but can never actually grasp a full picture of it.

It works a bit like if I said to you- try to remember what your first best friend looked like.
The image would be there but every time you tried to catch it to be still -so you could really look at it- its like sand- it just keeps falling out of your hand, but you do have a strong feeling of your best friend- even if you cannot see her as clearly as a photograph can.

This is how visulisations work- you cannot actually grasp a still shot of the image, but you can feel it and are able to see in your mind, short sharp shots of it.

different people visualize in different ways.....I can see things in my "minds eye".....very well....I see in color....I am able to imagine the the texture and sometimes it even triggers a imagined sense of smell....Of course I have an overactive imagination.... where as my Husband cannot visualize anything....
