I want to breed my Bettas but I don't have space for hundreds of the little things once they get large enough to require separation from each other. I don't want to flush, freeze, or sedate them. I would rather cull them in a more natural way by feeding them to larger predatory fish. I apologize if this offends anyone. My question is which predatory fish is best to use? I know an Oscar would be good, but I'm looking for something a little smaller. Any suggestions?

General many people do the initial cull with adult betta. Once the fry get larger than bite sized for betta this will not work well.

Ideal fish-

-Most chilids be sure that it can fit the fry in it's mouth
-Any catfish* with whiskers facing outward (not downward) that can fit them in it mouth.
-Paradise gourami (may not be big enough for older fry)
-Elephant nose*, ghost knife*

*Note these are night feeders so you'll rarely see them feed. (Which could be good or bad depending on your view.)

So your real question is what is a small predatory fish? Convict Cichlid. It only grows to about 4-6". About 1/3 the size of an Oscar. My local pizzeria has a 150 gallon tank with about 20, two adults and about 10 fry about 10 other small Cichlids.

If I could ask a question in return, why would you breed them if you dont want to keep the fry? It just doesnt make sense to me. But, if you dont want them, your male betta should take care of it for you.
