Well, if your choosing to be emo, than I assume you mean the "cultural emo", you know, with the tight clothes and indie/emo music. If that's the case, do whatever you want, but I'd suggest starting small with some spiked bracelets and moving up from there. It really depends on how far you want to go. Grab a Greenday cd too, they have some really good songs. Oh, and the Gorillaz rock too.
Sorry, but I'm more indie than emo so I can't help you too much. But I hope this helps a little bit at least. Have fun being emo! ^-^

Start wailing about how hard your life is. Start wearing skin tight clothes with either stars, skulls, bones, or pumpkin jack on them. Express your desire to all that you you hate the world and life. Listen to gut wrenching bands such as panic at the disco, fall out boy, dashboard confessional and green day. Wear thick black make up. If you are a boy wear even thicker make up that looks like you've been crying. Join myspace anmd take 'deep' pictures of you staring bemusedly up at the camera (see the myspace movie for this). Dye your hair black as a ravern wing and hanging over one eye. Express your hatred for 'mainstream bands' then google desperately for new ones... Ahh the list goes on
Just a note tho, why don't you try to be someone who reflects you, rather then copyng a trend? If you want to be a sterotype then go for it!

Ok, no need to cut yourself to be emo.
Lets see...
Music-listen to REAL emotional hardcore. MCR and FOB are NOT emo. They are pop-rock. Rites of Spring, Embrace, One Last Wish, Beefeater, Gray Matter, Fire Party, Moss Icon, and more.
Shirts-doesn't matter what color. Doesn't have to be black, it can be white. Most would have small designs on them, or bands shirts. Or really...and shirt you wanna wear.
Pants-Tight. Can be any color.
Bandana-Back pocket. You'll get it.
Jewelry-spikes and studs. 'nuff said.
Shoes-converse and skate shoes.
Piercings-Snakebite, nose, ears. If you're not into snakebites, then just do one side. Or, don't pierce anything. Your choice.
Hair-Dye it a darker color, and then maybe stick in lighter colors. Ex. Dye it black and make the roots and streaks blonde and light purple. Something like that. Do fringes. Short in back, long in front. You can either do a fringe that covers both eyes or just one eye. Look up pics to see the hair.
Makeup-black eyeliner, red eyeshadow, neat designs.
And some background.
Emo is a subgenre of punk, just more emotional with softer music. Don't listen to anyone who says all emos cut, they are ignorant assholes and need to do some ******* research and stop judging what they don't know. Sorry, I hate people like that. Emo is NOT goth. Emo is NOT punk. Yes, it was created from those two subcultures/genres...but it is not either of them.
Don't listen to people when they say Emos are too emotional. Because everyone is emotional. Some aren't that in tune with their emotions. I credit those who are, they are aware of themselves. But yeah, everyone is emotional to some point. We aren't robots or anything.
So, don't start off too fast. Don't go into school wearing bright colors and being happy go joy joy one day and the next come in wearing emo clothing. Gradually build up the style and musik. You'll get it.
Oh yes, be prepared to get "picked on". But, trust me, you get used to it, and learn to laugh at the ignorance that is held in most people.
