ive been told that if i buy and external hard drive and install all my programs on it and keep all my files on it my laptop will go a lot faster. is this true?

i run disk defrag almost every week and clear all temporary files every time i shut down. my laptop has got 1gb of ram and a 60 gb hard drive with a 1.7ghz pentium processor.

Howzit!!

The laptop will perform faster 'YES' but you will also need to get some more RAM and unistall those useless programs that you have not used in ages...

You need to defrag and mantain your laptop regularly... updated ant-spware.... there i am again preaching. Basically what i'm saying is look after the laptop the same way you will look after you shark (if you have one) or a dog then

accroding to your additional details i think install an external HDD will not make your notebook faster !
you have already 1 GB Ram . for a normal usage ( Office ) it's good.

If it's a 7800 rpm hard drive perhaps, more memory is probably more important.

when is the last time you defragged and used disk check?
