It's been interesting to see how horribly the idea has back-fired, but also a little scary to see just how seriously people seem to take it.

In Australia we are reputed to take a swipe at "tall poppies" as almost a matter of national pride, but it certainly isn't only Aussies who are indulging in TC bashing at the moment.

The way passions tend to run high on Y!A anyway, is it really productive to add another layer of false elitism to feed people's prejudices?

I must get my head out of the one category, I didn't know there was a bad smell over the TC tags.
I actually bear a Top Cat label but (as yet) haven't formed an opinion about them.
But you are right; this site does not need anything else to separate answerers or cause petty jealousies.
EDIT:
I just read all the previous answers, OMG I have no life!

It's ridiculous to me for anyone to get so obsessed with this site that people are actually arguing over it. I didn't know that the new tags were causing any problems, of course I don't spend every waking hour on the computer either. To me, this is a place to communicate and possibly help others with problems they are having. I'm not here to compete with anybody! I spend approximately 1 hour a day on this site and don't know anyone personally. It is a way for me to communicate with others as I am disabled and can't get out much. I'm sorry for those who feel annoyed or angered at the new tags. You are welcomed to have mine if you wish.

It is not uncommon for people to hate what they don't or can't have. It's part of the "down" side of human nature. Personally, when I discovered that I was a "TC", I didn't even know how I qualified. It's cool, though. I think it's sad that people are getting so upset over something so minor. They should join a "real" cause and direct their energy toward a more productive cause. There are so many bigger "issues" in this world. Don't you agree?

Actually, we should feel for the "top contributors", as they are the folks with the most boring lives and devote the most time to this "trivial pursuit".

the top contributos lead sad lives, we must indeed feel sorry for them, its like working for yahoo for free, yahoo r using them for giving free information, its kind of like free service for people to get answers so instead of buying an encyclopaedia they made yahoo answers
