If you use it correctly it is wondeful. Do not set the damper level to 10; the damper changes the resistance and many people sit down, crank it to the highest level and pull a few minutes- that's useless.
Instead, set it to three or four- it wil feel easy but the machine increases the resistance the harder you pull. It is mostly a leg motion, your arms are straight until the handle passes your kness. If you imagine the whole motion being a 4 count, one is pulling back and 2,3,4 are sliding back to the starting point.
I row as much as one hour per day and it definitely burns more calories than any other piece of gum equipment. Go to concept2.com; they make most rowers and have tons of info.
Good luck

it will if used correctly. also try free weights as they tone bicep, tricep and pectorals but remember to start at low weights/resistance otherwise you can damage your muscle tissue. If you want really huge muscles in your arms you have to lose weight first and then start doing muscle training. Whe your muscle gets bigger it is because the tissue is ripped and a new layer grows on top. thats basically what happens so when you've lost weight, explosive weight lifting. good luck on that!
