Was that only for the boys or did it apply to both genders? Did that type of thing really happen?

I do believe that the pile of bones belonged to babies that had been deformed in some way or another, and were thus deemed to be more or less 'unfit' for the Spartan lifestyle. A quick tidbit of research supports this occurrence from the film, and does not mention that it was reserved for males only. Sparta was a society that revolved around strength, so those who were seen as weak were no doubt cast aside rather early in life.
