I had a wonderful English teach in junior high school, Jan Maggiore. I lived in this backwards, narrow minded little town, and she was absolutely a breath of fresh air. She introduced me to classical art, literature beyond what the school deemed appropriate for my age group, and gave me a glimpse of the world outside. I have never forgotten her.

It affected me by opening me up to the vastness of what there is in the world. She made me realize there there was so much more than that itty bitty little town, and those narrow minded little people.

The person who has affected my life the most was my mom. She died of cancer a year ago but she taught me everything about life and especially about dignity. She was kind, thoughtful, sweet, willing to help others at any time. The whole time she was sick she was worried about my dad and us kids. She never complained one time while she was sick or when she was actively dying. She is my hero.
