I totally agree with you. Fear is our greatest self induced obstacle for growth and happiness. I love the words of the following song "the rose" which say that too.
Some say love it is a river
That drowns the tender reed.
Some say love it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed.
Some say love it is a hunger
An endless, aching need
I say love it is a flower,
And you it’s only seed.
It’s the heart afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance
It’s the dream afraid of waking
That never takes the chance
It’s the one who won’t be taken,
Who cannot seem to give
And the soul afraid of dying
That never learns to live.
And the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long.
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong.
Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snow
Lies the seed that with the sun’s love,
In the spring, becomes a rose.

Fear puts doubt in us causing us to hold back. Without this emotion we could do anything which may not always be a good thing. Fear is not always a bad thing. It protects us but at the same time could also work as a hinder if we only rely on this emotion.

Fear of failure fear of losing fear of death fear of getting pregnant lots of fear but take out the word fear and then you can handle it yes you only have to fear fear itself

Well, the anticipation of something horrible about to happen causes me fear, but then the fear and anticipation often ends up being worse than the event or thing I was frightened of.

Fear is a debilitating emotion - like rabbits frozen in the car headlights. Don't be frightened of anything, other than fear for fear will stop you doing what you have to do.

Fear of the molestors, the rapist, the terrorists!!, the mexican, (and the smokers?!).. Fear is how they push authoritarianism.
