I'm 20 years old. I was recently diagnosed having polycistic ovaries syndrom and because of the acne I'm taking Gynofen 35 for the last two months. I'm supposed to stay on the pill for 6 months. Many friends tell me that I'm gonna gain a lot of weight because of the pill. What's your opinion? Also, what other changes should I expect?

Not everyone who goes on the pill will gain weight (which is actually water weight, not fat). But for those who do gain weight the average weight gain is about 5-10 lbs.

If you still aren't sure talk to your dr. As for the acne issue, I found that taking a multi-vitamin was also helpful.

As for using the pill for PCOS that is an indefinite thing as I discovered because of my own ordeal with the PCOS, not just a limit of 6 months because when one stops the symptoms return.

If you don't feel comfortable with talking to your dr, get a second opinion but preferrably from someone that is not in the same practice as the dr you currently go to.

Oral contraceptives have been prescribed to help control the symptoms of the PCOS(polycystic ovarian syndrome). The reason they help is by suppressing your ovulation so that cysts are unable to form on your ovaries. There are so many birth control pills available that, perhaps if one has bothersome side effects, there may be another one that's a better fit for your body. Please know, not everyone gains weight with oc's. It's important to keep in mind that some initial side effects will dissipate after a time, thus the recommendation you try it for at least three months. The pills can also help to regulate your periods. You didn't mention whether or not yours have been irregular but that is also common symptom of PCOS. I hope that things begin to improve for you soon. Take care.

Well I will recommend to you to find another way to treat the acne and get on the pill Yaz. This birth control is main prescribed to women with PCOS (polycistic ovaries syndrom). This will work with you and get you steady and look at controlling your PCOS. One thing is that you need to be on it at all times until you would want to have a kid. Only because with PCOS you are not able until you go throught hormonal treatment. This is not something that will go away in 6 months. I promise I was diagnosts about 9 months ago and I am still on birthcontrol for it. Good luck honey! They have YAz for the PCOS and Differen Gel for the ance. If you need more information about the medication then you may want to look at the links below.
