Since Roman times, the tormenting of animals was popular in Britain. Popular, especially amongst the nobility, was bull-baiting using dogs and there was fierce competition to breed the best dog for this. They wanted a short and muscular dog with a massive jaw, a dog that could move into a bull's head and bring him down. Eventually breeders came up with the bulldog, similar to today's. Public opinion condemned this awful entertainment and it was banned in 1835. The bulldog faced extinction, so breeders decided to breed out the ferociousness and today we have the same short and stocky dog with its big mouth, and its even bigger heart.
