Yeah, that's a really dumb one - i never thought about it before.
How many times have you ever noticed someone's thumb? Never heard a guy say "check out the set of thumbs on her"

I guess you tend to stick up your thumb when it's sore because you are more aware of it & unconsciously stiffen it up to try not to bump it against something.
You may also unconsciously trying to draw attention or to get sympathy.
