I have loved reading everyone's name suggestions, there's such a huge difference it what people think constitutes a nice name. I saw the name Devon mentioned, its a good name, but in Australia it is also the popular word for Luncheon meat...eek!
In high school 40% of the boys were called Andrew, they all had to go by there family names...OK for all the Punchy ''smithys'' and those fortunate enough to have a family name like Hudson or John but what about the poor ''Tidmouths'',''Littlejohns'' and ''Higginbottoms''?
Anyway, to get to the point, in a world where our kids are more and more likely to travel and mix with others from overseas online etc any absolute No-No's?This could be cos they are the brand name of a contraceptive, slang for a toilet/ imbecile, or because they are the name of 50% of your countries prison population or toddlers playgroup mates. Whatever is vulgar or just plain awful where you are let's list it so that poor parents can first eliminate a few rotten names

I hope that what I am about to write does not offend anyone, this is just my opinion.
I am unkeen on unisex names like Lesley or Ashley. They have never done it for me.
Also, I am not keen on being named after a season (Autumn/Summer) or thing - Apple, Peaches, Fifi, Coco, Star, Bracken, Lichen, Blaze, Scout, etc.
I am also unkeen on the popularity of surnames becoming first names - Campbell, Jackson, Kennedy, Eddison, Harvey, Carter, etc.
I guess my biggest pet hate having worked in schools, is how parents spell their child's name. For example - Lochlann, Izac, Nichole, Danyell, Zoey, etc.

There really are some awful names or combinations of names out there. I worked in a courtroom for 5 years and heard some of the worst names ever. For instance, the girl who was arrested for possession of cocaine and her last name was Snow, first name was Winter. Some people are merciless when choosing their childs name. I am not a fan of hugely common names, but geez, some people are just outrageous.
and Butterfly has a lot of nerve being so rude with some of the questions she herself has asked... but then some people just are not content with their own lives so they have to be rude to people all of the time.

The most important thing when choosing a name is just to be thoughtful. Choose a name that goes well with the last name, has meaning (beneficial to the child), and doesn't lend itself to terrible nicknames. It's great to be creative, just don't get crazy, because this child will have to live with the name for the most important formative years of his or her life.

According to the NSW Department of Births Deaths and Marriages, the 10 most popular girls and boys names for 2006 were as follows:
Boys: Jack, Joshua, William, Lachlan, Thomas, James, Daniel, Noah, Ryan, Ethan
Girls: Chloe, Charlotte, Ella, Emily, Olivia, Jessica, Isabella, Mia, Sophie, Sienna
So I'd avoid any of those if you don't want your child to be the 5th Ethan or Sienna in their class.

Yes, you said it so. We are living in a small world. Why not check the name of the baby first via Internet? Naming a baby is not done in an impulse, it has to be something of value to you and/or of importance to your life. I would suggest you to do some websearch first... Google "Baby names" and I can guarantee you that you'll find a lot of sources in the world wide web. =)

I think that you should do whatever you feel comfortable doing because that's what everyone else does. What does it matter what anyone else thinks? It doesn't.The only thing that matters is what you think.

It is up to the parents as to what they want to name their children. When you are pregnant for nine months then go through the pain of having a child then you are entitled to name that child whatever you want.
Who really cares what you think.
