If every there was a 'homework style question this was it', and whilst there is no problem with seeking advice on the Internet, I can never understand why people just simply cut and paste extracts out of wikipedia and other similar web sites.

Yes as many have people have suggested, Shakespeare lived during the 16th century, and to get an understanding of his plays at that time, you could do worse than explore web sites of the Globe theatre.

As for global events at the time.

1. The Spanish were considered the world's superpower at the time, creating a vast Empire in southern American.
2. Sir Francis Drake, amongst many others, were committing acts of piracy against Spanish ships returning from colonises.
3.1588 saw the defeat of the Spanish Armada

There are numerous events which occurred during this 'exciting time' for England, but the above answers should provide you with a base line.

Happy researching

Like Shakespeare you can't always spell his name correctly.
Shakespeare was born in the 16th Century. There was a lot going on at the time. The English discovered America, tobacco and potatoes.
In my opinion it was not a good time for the English. We could do without America, tobacco is deadly and potatoes make you fat.

Shakespeare was born in 1564. In 1534, Henry VIII had declared himself the supreme head of the Church of England, severing the Church of England from the Catholic Church. The following year, Sir Thomas More (author of "Utopia") was beheaded for objecting to that. In 1536, Henry VIII confiscated all the land that had belonged to English Catholic monasteries. In 1547, Henry's son Edward VI died and Henry's still-Catholic daughter, Mary, became Queen. She died in 1558.. During that 11-year interval of Catholic rule, Shakespeare's father began his career in Stratford city government. Queen Mary was succeeded by Elizabeth I, the Protestant daughter of Henry and Anne Boleyn (whom Henry had beheaded). Elizabeth managed to keep England out of most of the Catholic vs Protestant wars (except for a limited involvement in the Netherlands) that were raging in continental Europe. In 1588, Phillip II of Spain, who had been married to the English Catholic Queen Mary, launched the Spanish Armada in a failed attempt to return England to Catholic rule. In the last 30 years of the century, about 400 English Catholic missionaries were trained in France and Holland and sent to England, where about 100 of them (including the brother of one of Shakespeare's teachers and one of Shakespeare's fellow students at the Stratford Guild School) were caught and drawn and quartered. In 1593, Christopher Marlowe (at that time ranked as the best playwright in England) was killed, perhaps murdered by agents of the English government. Marlowe had previously been a spy for the English government against the Catholic missionary school. Shakespeare was not allowed to openly refer to any of this in his plays, because the government censored all reference to currently "hot" political topics.
