I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 running Windows XP. I have 1 GB of RAM and I tend to multitask when I'm on the computer. What is the best way to configure my memory and virtual memory settings to keep my computer running relatively fast and smoothly? Or can you suggest a program that will manage it for me? Thanks.

Windows doesn't usually do a terrible job of managing but if you want to set it manually don't go beyond 2.5x physical ram and you'll be ok

In your case that's 2500....you can set that as both initial & max

All you need to do is to reconfigure your Virtual Memory settings:
1- Click Right-Mouse on (My Computer)
2- Click on Properties
3- Select the Advanced Group from the upper tap
4- Click on Settings for the Performance
5- Select Advanced
6- Click on Change button
7- It is better to select the System manage size but sometimes its better to modify it by your self
8- Don't make the Virtual Memory less than 2GB = 2084MB
9- Click on Set
10- You should restart you machine after this modification
11- I may be useful in another questions so please ask me any where, any time

Just set the virtual memory to automatic (windows controlled), it does a good job.

More imortant, if you are having performance issues is the hard drive speed & buffer (7200 61mb is much better than most laptop drives.

Also, turn off Services you don't use (Mt Computer, Manage).

And stop programs from automatically starting, whether you want them too or not. Run MSCONFIG. But don't stop your virus or spyware of course!

You might be able to add more memory. Use the scanner at http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/ to see if you can add more or faster RAM.

good luck

On the custom size, you can change the Initial size.

I have the same laptop, I bumped up my virtual memory to double the setting, it works wonders.
