Grapes of Wrath - John Steinbeck. A great book that outlines a families horrible plight on their way to California during the great depression in search of hope. Along the way many events take place and change things drastically before then even get there. A well written book, with a movie that was just as well done (with Henry Fonda).

Barbara Tuchman - Distant Mirror: The Calamitous Fourteenth Century. Most of todays problems can be traced right back here. Very thought provoking work. A must read.
