You didn't mention your budget or when you are going, but i think you will find this directory useful to locate cheap places to stay in London.

You can filter the results by price, star rating, last minute and location to work out whether it's best to wait until you arrive or to book in advance.

I always advise folks to book in advance - who want to waste valuable time searching out accommodation on your valuable holiday time. But you can get great deals within 21 days, provided you don't go in peak season ( July - September and Easter / Christmas ) - always book ahead around these dates.

Anything in the West End will be fine ( I've given you some locations on the links below ) - and whatever you do, book on a local website - the deals are much better. Most of the US websites are not competitive.

Anyway, this will start you off. There are likely others and other areas, but i think you'll find these offers hard to beat:

A car in London is a hindrance not a help. If you think the tube is confusing what do you find London's road system for heavens sake?!
Furthermore the congestion charge is £8 per day and parking will probably cost you more than the value of your car. Assuming you can find anywhere to park, which is unlikely.

Hi there,
Firstly I recommend you should book in advance. London hotels can get very busy. Secondly, it sounds to me like you should stay in either Bayswater or Bloomsbury. Both these areas are very central and have many hotels.
Bloomsbury is a little bit more expensive than Bayswater but is within walking distance of the British Museum and the West End so is perfect for your needs. Bayswater is next to Hyde Park and a cab into the West End would cost a few pounds.
Have a look here for advice and suitable hotels:

Good luck finding your accommodation.

The Sandrigham Hotel is where we stayed years ago, but it was reasonable and less expensive than the Douglas House which is where a lot of American travelers stayed at that time.

Check out this website.

As long as you're truly in London and not out in the suburbs, travelling around by tube is incredibly simple, usually quick and much much cheaper than taxis. Alternatively, use the buses and see more of London as you go along.
