The first book to read (if you like the movie) is the book the movie is based on - The Graphic Novel "300" by Frank Miller (who wrote "Sin City.")

Then, to read more realistic background on the event, read "Gates of Fire" by Stephen Pressfield; then, if you are totally addicted to learning about it, go to the ancient greek historian Herodotus, which is where the account comes from.

All of them are available at the library for free. Since the movie will make the books "hot" you can ask the librarian to put a book on hold. Also check your TV listings if you have the History Channel - they've put together a really nice 2 hr special on the battle of Thermopylae which I watched last night. Cool, specific renactments and diagrams, with interesting quotes from historians and experts (including the author of "Gates of Fire" which I and your first answerer highly recommend.)

Persian Fire by Tom Holland. Brilliant book about the Persian invasion of Greece, equal to his Rubicon about the fall of the Roman Republic.

The original account of this is in the histories by Herodotus. Look up his name at your library, and you should find it. I have read two novels about it as well, but I advise you to read Herodotus first.
