when me or ppl I know go into department stores we sometimes end up getting followed around by a worker or security guard who arent trying to be very "sneaky".
they make it very obvious that they are following/watching us, even though they may not admit it.
They ask if we need help finding something when we dont. that makes me just not want to shop there.
We do have money, otherwise we would not go into the store...right.
plz no smart-a** suggestions.
Why do they do this and what makes them only seem to do this to certain ppl more than others?

Unfortunately there are people who stereotype others all the time and what I've found that works for me is to turn around and say,"excuse me i have plenty money to buy anything i want up in here and i would appreciate it if you wouldn't harass me while i shop because it's make me uncomfortable enough not to come back in here to shop again and is the manager on duty." Usually you can get things done like this. Good Luck!

This could depend on several factors you have no revealed. Clothing, as previously mentioned, is a red flag. Suspiciously looking around while shopping will get you noticed. Location of the store in a bad area. Previous shoplifting matching a similar description to yourself. The number of "trigger" factors are prolific; however, this could also be an internal situation that you perceive to be occurring when, in actual fact, isn't. No way to know at this point.

to find the answer you should try and figure out what stands out about you and the others they follow and what you all have in common.
is it age? race? gender? a certain way of dressing?
they've probably Identified you all (unjustly, it sounds) as a threat. they are probably prejudice in someway.
many stores will automatically assume a teenager in a long black coat is going to steal something. i've seen it happen.
thats just what they do, they lump a group of people together , usually based on ideas they've gotten from the media, friends, or personal expiriences, maybe a group of teenage dellingents frequents the shop or area and so they've come to unfairly assume anyone of a similar age or fashion sense will act like the kids who messed with them.
the fact is they are following you around because they think you are going to steal or cause trouble, the best I can suggest is to think it over and try to figure out why they've singled out you and the others.
good luck.

They are just doing their job. You probably fit the profile of a person most likely to shop lift. Everyone has to do their job in a specific way if they want to keep it. Also remember that most dept store sales people and security officers are on the low pay end of things. And to put it as nicely as I can-you get what you pay for. . .

we were taught to suspect all people equally, lol! Really though, when I worked at an upper scale dept. store, the only thing specific we were told to watch were people in big coats they could stuff things in or a big bag.oh, and people that act as if they don't want help from the salespeople is considered "suspicious", so if one of these people follow you just act natural, not paranoid, they might be picking up on it...

They are trying to prevent a theft. Doesn't seem like they are well trained. Unless they rather you don't go to their store.

Certain groups are targeted because of reputation. This of course is not fair to the individual. That's the way things are. if you find that you cannot ease their fears you may steal, don't go there anymore. Spend you money elsewhere.
