You don't have to worry which hotel. There are so many according to your taste. Some were already mentioned here.
But just in case, you don't have to smoke cigarette in public places. It's prohibited. All other things, you can do anything you want as a civilized person.

The Marco Polo is arguably the best hotel in Davao to stay in, but you can bet the rates there will make your head spin. ;)
The relatively new Crown Regency Residences (http://www.crownregency.com/davao/davao.php) is a great place to stay, with its location and very affordable rates for a three-star, at US$30/night.
You can also try, as recommended, the Waterfront Insular (http://www.waterfronthotels.com.ph/davao/davaohtml.htm). It's a very reliable hotel, owned by the same group behind the Manila Pavilion and the Waterfront hotels in Cebu.
Davao is a lovely place, a total tourist paradise. The diving opportunities are awesome, with some spectacular dive sites with some of the most beautiful sea life on the planet.
Davao City is also a short drive away from Mount Apo, the Philippines’ highest mountain, at 10,311 feet above sea level.
Places to go include:
- Children's Museum of Davao City (located at the corner of Tulip Drive and R. Quimpo Boulevard in Matina)
- Crocodile Park
- Diving at Samal Island, the Talicud Islands, the Ligid Islands, and Nagan Bay
- The Davao Museum (located in the Insular Village in Lanang, Davao City)
- The Ford Academy of the Arts (found in Ladislawa Garden Village in Buhangin)
- The Philippine Eagle Nature Center in Malagos, Calinan
- San Pedro Cathedral, Davao City's oldest church, located along San Pedro Street and Claro M. Recto Avenue
- Shrine of the Holy Infant Jesus of Prague, an open-air Catholic chapel with a lovely view of a nearby coconut plantation and a fruit tree garden located in Matina town
- The T'boli Weaving Center
Have a good time in Davao!

Lucky you to be goign to Davao. I've only been there once and I liked it.
It is a nice city but stay out of the back streets, some troublesome things go on back there.
I stayed at the Waterfront Insular. There is a golf course next the the hotel and a casino nearby. The room was comfortable and had a beautiful view. Average price, not too cheap but not expensive either. The pool was great, really nice. My 3 year old son really enjoyed it as did my husband
Have fun in Davao!

If budget is not a concern to you, then book and stay at MarcoPolo, Waterfront, Mandaya, if you want a more romantic tropical summer vacation? consider Samal island at Pearl farm. It's nice if you speak the local dialects.
