The idea is that as .com domains become less frequent, some of the other top level names will offer better alternatives. However, "ws" is not known by many people and it is not particularly catchy or easy to remember so there is no reason it will become that well known. Of course, if there happens to be one particular site that is very well known and uses it, that could still work.

For example, .us is not that well known, but http://del.icio.us become a very popular site (a subdomain of www.icio.us).

Instead of .ws, I would recommend looking into .net or .info or if it is not a for-profit site then .org.

No it is not true! WS is a domain of Western Samoa so how could that replace .com domain which represents commercial web site. Another popular Internet domain is .tv which is registered domain for Tuvalu but often being used by a commercial tv stations. Thing is that every Internet domain ( org, net, gov, com) has its purpose and can not be replaced.

The people who run .ws have been saying this for years. They say there are many more available domains on .ws than there are on .com

However, .ws has never really taken off. It's up to you if you want to believe them. You could get a better .ws domain than you could a .com, but they are more expensive.
