I'll tell you what I did, which would be easier to explain.
I went to my Yahoo! email account and clicked on that little box where you can see the shape of a head.
After that, all you have to do is follow the instructions onscreen and bingo!
There's your new avatar!

go to your profile and then to the right of your avatar at the bottom of the options it says edit my profile in white and blue or something like that, and then click that. there you'll see a picture options and you'll see your avatar and under it, it has an 'edit my avatar' option under it.
