Apparently your question is very simple. Actually it is not so!

I appreciate questions like these, which deserve answres!

Algebraic expressions give unique answers to 'questions that may come from differrent sorces (people)'. Related conditions will be differrent, which leads to differrent answers!

You have set only one condition that 'a' is bigger, which is a language-expression. Usually a language-expression could be interpreted in many ways. For example when you say 'a' is always greater than 'b' or by a use of '>' symbol matter is fixed. Otherwise a reader can argue that 'a is bigger' and 'b is much bigger'...so on. So please don't leave options!

Next is representing 'a' and 'b' as number-units! Here too there are 'whole number units', or 'decimal units', or fractions!

Next is 'positve number units', or 'negative number units' or a combination of both these, which is a headache!

All these change 'pattern of answer' to question you have raised!

Your algebraic-expression therefore has to be made 'a definite condition', which sensible people will answer in a unique manner! So the first principle to be followed is ask question in a simple and straightforward manner!

Coming back to your question...

Differrence between 'a' and 'b' is "either (a-b) or (b-a)".

Reason for that is algebra permits use of 'numbers less than zero'. So it hardly matter that 'a' is bigger, which of course helps people who find answer to your question' by understanding needs you have fixed!

Please revert back to me if you are not convinced!

If a is bigger than b it means that b may be subtracted from a to obtain another number , x say.
This information may be written as an equation as follows:-
a - b = x

Think of two numbers 4 and 9.
9 is bigger than 4 so 4 may be subtracted from 9:-
9 - 4 = 5

For increasing cubic binomials the final formula is as follows: (a + b) ^ 3 = a^3 + 3*a^2*b^a million + 3*a^a million*b^2 + b^3 on your case, a is x and b is -y^5 So (x - y^5)^3 = x^3 + 3*x^2*(-y^5)^a million + 3*x^a million*(-y^5)^2 + (-y^5)^3 Simplified: =x^3 - 3x^2*y^5 + 3x*y^10 - y^15 :D

If you don't know the value of either a or b, than all you have to do to write the difference between them is: a - b
