I'm changing my answer here since I realized this this isn't a simple case of a middle school student not doing their lab homework. This is more complicated. I searched and found out what happens when the substances are heated on their own. That's found in the first link here.
combined substances' reaction isn't as easy to find, but I think by using a combination of the next three links I've added, you will be able to find the answer. I'm not sure if you are looking for the chemcial formula and balanced equation since you have "reason". If it makes sodium iodide, then it's easy and I've included a great site on this for the last link.
I know that you know you are taking salt and putting some drops of iodine in it, covering it and heating it to 1. what happens, 2. why the reaction took place (should be in your notes) 3. anything else.

u don't want 2 find out what will really happen, but if u must know try it outdoor & carefull with ya eyes.
