Try and convince them through your behavioural patterns. That is the only way to do it.

I know I'm getting old, but I thought the definition of emo was being depressed and cutting. Again, I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that that's how people perceive emos. So, you describe yourself as emo, but don't understand why your parents might want to take you to therapy. They probably see it as I do.

I say let them. If they want to pay someone big bucks to help you when you don't need it it's their problem. When I was growing up, my mom always accused me of being on drugs. I was never the type to say anything most of the time, but I finally told her if she thought so to take me to the hospital for a test right then and there. She didn't and never said anything about it again. So, go to therapy. Prove them wrong, and they'll leave you alone. Don't forget that they are only doing it because they love you, are concerned and want the best for you.

Talk with them openly and honestly. Respect their concerns and try not to get defensive. Explain to them your views on life, the things you feel. Even look up information on depression and explain to them how it differs from your perspective. Listen to what they have to say. They obviously care about you. In listening to their concerns you will be better able to explain your point of view.

A good way to prove that you aren't cutting would be your lack of scars.

If all else fails maybe you could agree to family therapy. You could go together and the therapist would be able to help them understand you better and alleviate their fears about your safety. Any half-decent therapist knows the difference between choices like emo and depression and a family therapist has experience in helping teens communicate with their parents.

No matter what good for you for looking for a way to actually get through to your parents and communicate with them. Another poster suggested you "grow up." Seems to me you might just be doing a pretty good job of that even if not in some idealized way according to the other poster.

Well, when you're 'emo', most people automatically assume that you're a cutter. It's a stereotype that holds true to most people. So, they worry. Therapy isn't the worst thing in the world.... So, agree to go. Besides, the therapist will find out that you're neither a cutter or suicidal and will let you're parents know that.

Ask them to sit down with you because you want to discuss a serious topic with them. Then explain that you are not suicidal and see if they'll tell you what makes them think you are.

Hey, I'm emo too. Woohoo. Party.

Two suggestions, love... either go to therapy long enough for your therapist to realize that there's nothing to worry about...

OR develop a drug problem that will **** your parents attention away from the whole suicide/ depression thing.

Or do both, just because drugs are fun.

That's what I do, and it's working MAGNIFICENTLY!

Sit down and talk to them. If they still don't believe you then talk to the therapist and tell him/her.
