Have the opportunity to march in the Rose Parade (in 1977!!)
added later- I was in band because I WANTED to be in it. I don't think anyone should be forced to be in any of the extra classes if they don't want to be.

Being in band is fun in high school. You not only perform during halftime for the football games, but also you get to compete with other high schools in other cities.
You also get to be in parades and if you are really great you compete in national parades. (i.e. Tournament of Roses)
The point is, you make new friends, you travel and you have fun.
You also get to hang out with the drill team, flags and banners. (The ladies who perform with the band.)
It's just a great way to make friends in high school.
And it helps you prepare for the future in the real world:
Responsibility.
Team work.
Creativity.
etc.etc.etc.
