The term trivia is used to refer to unimportant (or trivial) information, but it can also mean general knowledge. Generally, the latter definition prevails when people "play trivia".

To me, trivia is general knowledge that doesn't fit into any one category...... although that doesn't mean that all trivia is trivial.
I just think it's fun, and it has given me some knowledge of things that I never would have known otherwise.

It makes me fun at parties too !
