You have two layers of skin, the epidermis (outermost) and the dermis (innermost). See diagram at:

The outermost layer, the epidermis, contains pores, the hair, etc. It forms a waterproof protective wrap over the body's surface. The dermis contains blood vessels, the roots of hair, nerve endings, and sweat glands. The skin functions as protection, a sensory organ (touch), heat regulation (sweating), etc.
