I want to create a fun lesson plan that will teach my grade two students about "compound words." I wanted to start the lesson by introducing a poem or an enrichment short story that contains compound words. I have been searching for some but my efforts deemed fruitless. Do you know any websites where I could find these enrichment poems or short stories that contain compound words. Or, do u have any that you would like to share with me. Thanks a million for your help.

I found a couple of sites that might help you. I also found this poem that has compound words...

I’d Like To Be A Butterfly
by Charles Ghigna

I'd like to be a butterfly
So beautiful and free,
Flying high into the sky
Above each cloud and tree.

I'd like to be a grasshopper .
And bounce from place to place,
But every time I try to jump,
I fall flat on my face.

I'd like to be a spider
And spin instead of crawl,
But I've no silk to make a web,
And I've no legs at all.

I'd like to be silver snake,
Handsome, long and lean,
But every time I try to stretch,
I'm still too short and green.

I'd like to race my friend the worm
And finally be a winner,
But both of us just might become
A bluebird's two-course dinner.

I'd like to be so many things,
A hero and a thriller,
I'd like to be a butterfly
But I'm just a caterpillar.

I can't think of any short stories or poems appropriate for second graders that contain compound words. If no one else comes up with some, what about writing your own story or poem using compound words that would be familiar to your students. There are some obvious ones like lunchbox, playground, baseball, and schoolhouse, but there are also less obvious ones that most second graders would know, like watermelon, strawberry, shirtdress, sweatshirt, shoetree, flowerpot, haircut, ponytail, teacup, coffeepot, teapot, and teabag. You can even include some like "underwear" or "nightgown" that might elicit giggles from the little ones. You could even talk about the word "kindergarten" which came from two German words--"kinder" which is child and "garten" which I think if garden. (NOTE: The Yahoo spell checker said that shirtdress should be either hyphenated or two words, but my M/S Word spell checker did not mark it as an error.)
