1 month should be enough if you've been using English as the medium of instruction. A few more months may be necessary if you aren't familiar with the English used in more serious situations, not taking short cuts as may be the case with the colloquial English.

I think the best way is to try out the sample exam from start to finish. Then you know more or less how much you can get and how much more you need to practice.

I bought the sample booklet from IELTS, had a go with it and after trying out another one, I went to the exam a week later. After the first try, I listened to the sample audio interviews several times, tried to write out what I would have said in the interviews and took another sample test. That was all I had done for preparation. There is some pressure when actually taking the test. You should have enough rest the day before the test and try to arrive early to the test site. You really need to be alert and attentive when taking the listening test. The audio equipment may not be good enough at the site. When taking the interview, be relaxed and confident but be polite at ALL times. It may take some practise as it may be different from how English is spoken among peers.

If you have been exposed to English as the medium of instruction for a few years and are comfortable with it, I think 6.0 shouldn't be too hard. I messed up my interview because I couldn't think about the topic and still got good enough results to go abroad to study. What they look for is not entirely how right you sound and how logical your arguments are. They are more after how well you express yourself in the language.

p.s. Pardon my American English. :)

Sooner, as soon as you can because as soon you prepare yourself, you'll have an education soon, ok?

The more time you study - the more it will pay off.

Good Luck!!!
