if the computer is running at 100% of cpu usage, it will slow down your computer.

go open up the task manger -> and click on the processes tab at the top -> look down the cpu column to see which programs have the most cpu usage (ignore System Idle Process. it's always 98 or something high) -> find whatever it is that is over 50 -> right-click and click end process now -> a pop-up warning should pop up -> click yes -> and the cpu usage should go down -> if clicking yes screws up the computer -> just restart it, everything will be back to normal.

Actually memory IS an issue. 512 MB is very weak for a computer today. You need at least 1 GB to keep up with today's programs.

But here's a simple way to disable programs when you don't want to get complicated:

-Download Spybot Search and Destroy
-Install it.
-Update (optional, provides anti-spy)
-Go to Mode, then Advanced Mode
-Go to Tools on the left side, then System Startup
-Just uncheck anything you don't want to run when computer turns on.

Also, for advanced users, there is a tweak to boost performance:

-Find your way to your System Info and Performance Options, different on different OS.
-In there, make sure it's set on Applications
-In the section for the paging file, increase the numbers slightly.

It might be your system cache which affects your physical memory, look in the lower right section of your task mngr window and see what it's using and what is available.
To find out more about the system cache use the help in your task mngr window.

good luck
