A Cat can sometimes cause overheating. A plugged converter restricts the engine's exhaust flow which can cause overheating. Although Cat is used to reduce normal emission. Specifically for the Oxides of nitrogen or NOx gas. It has to reach at least 600 degrees to burn all the hydrocarbons or unburned fuel that produces smog. They will get very hot especially if you have a misfiring cylinder. One thing for sure, You will never pass your smog if you have a faulty Cat.

Yes. Because your car cannot get rid of as much exhaust. You will also notice a small loss of power. I had one clog up on me a long time ago and I never got it fixed. And I ended up having to replace the whole valve train.

A cat can overheat, but it cannot CAUSE overheating (of the engine I presume?)

And I see absolutely no relationship between a cat and the valvetrain?!?! What the heck
