Not necessarily middle linebacker, but any linebacker position. The linebacker position requires leadership, speed, strength, coverage skills, hard hitting, breaking down plays for your team, agility, emotional leadership and strength, and most importantly the MAN OF THE TEAM!

From an athletic perspective, playing cornerback is the most difficult position to play (in football). You're right, linebackers take on 300-pound linemen on one play then cover shifty running backs, who run sub 4.4. forties, on the next. But linebackers have more help than corners: if the back or receiver gets away from the linebacker, he has to get past the "last line of defense." But when Terrell Owens or Steve Smith or Marvin Harrison--whom a cornerback faces on EVERY play--gets by the corner, he almost always has far less help.
There are superior athletes at every position, but with the possible exception of wide receiver, I think the cornerback position has the most superior athletes. On each play they're matched up mano-a-mano against world-class athletes with world-class speed ... with little help behind them.

I would have to say free safety. They make the defensive set calls in the cover 2 scheme. They have to have the speed to cover a reciever or a back. They have to have the strength to fight off a block on a blitz. They must come up to stop the run at times. Often, they are the last line of defence. They need hitting power and leaping ability. The best MLB in the league now, Brian Urlacher started out as a safety, so what does that tell you?

I think you are on the right track.
I feel on the defensive side, MLB is the team general and field commander. His job intails several facets depending on what the offense throws his way.
On the offensive side, I am a bit torn between QB and RB. The QB is the commander of the offense, but the RB has potentially more to do. A RB can block, carry, catch and pass (see LT).
All that said, I think the RB needs to be most athletic.

RB. 99.9% of the plays they are in on.. They are hit in some way or another... By, generally speaking... Someone who is alot bigger then them. They have to be fast, agile, have great vison, think fast, catch, know blocking schemes, adjust when holes aren't there.. And have indurance. In my opinion.. again, It's the RB

The Center ..... He's the real Qb on the field has to call pass blocking schemes, read the defense's for bliztes, remember the snap count, and has to take a pounding each play while hiking the ball. All the qualities you are looking for and then some..

I would say free safety you must be fast strong decent hands, must be able to break down every pass play so you gotta have a brain and good intuition of the game.

Tight End. They have to block as well as a lineman yet be able to catch and run with the ball like a running back.
