Yes

Its called opportunity cost. Bill Gates makes more money than this, but, by picking up the $5,000 he will still make his other wages plus $5,000. Since the $5,000 does not preclude the opportunity for him to make other income, it is in his best interest to pick it up.

If picking up the money cost him an opportunity to make other income that is worth more than the $5,000, than no he should not. I sincerely doubt that anyone could find an activity that while walking down the street would pay more than $5,000 and would be lost if you paused for a couple of seconds.

I would suspect so. No-one walks past any cash paper. I earn circa half a million quid a year, tax free, yet when I was in London in January I stooped to pick up a 5 quid note. I went into a Dr Who shop and bought a Dalek.

So, I suggest Bill would do the same but buy a bigger Dalek....one that is 1000 times bigger than the one I bought.

Hope that helps.

Yes, he picks up quarters from the floor.
then he'd probably turn that quarter into half a million dollars and donate the money to charity, in a respectable and generous way.

just because Gates has a lot of money doesn't mean that he wastes it.

If he could throw money out, of any value, he has too much. Whether his time could be better spent doing an alternative activity which could be making him more than 5K is a better question. The answer to that one, unfortunately to all of us people who don't make as much money as him, is yes, he could be.
