They go to the place that's infected because since the early days of horror movies the home or main source of the monster was often the place that was reasoned to be the way to kill it/them like Dracula, the mummy etc. It's where the monster is most vulnerable. Doing so at night Is probably influenced by earlier moves as well as Night of the Living Dead as so many zombie movies were. Since that's the most influential Zombie movie. And the night has always been associated with the unknown and the uncertain. It's also a cliche, ie the dark stormy night or the foggy cemetery.

Maybe because the hero has a 9 to 5 job, then has to go home to eat a nice home-cooked meal with the wife and kids, helps clean up the dishes, gives the kids a bath and reads a story before their bedtime, makes passionate love to the wife, AND THEN FINALLY GOES OUT INTO THE NIGHT TO KILL THE ZOMBIES !!
Exhausted from all of his obligations, the weary hero comes home and plops into the bed at about 4 AM. When he and his wife wake up in the morning, the wife (unaware of her husband's secret life as a hero) turns to her husband and says, "You better start going to bed earlier, honey, 'cause you're beginning to look like a ZOMBIE" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Because night creates a sense of mystery and dread. Dark represents bad for symbolism. And why would the hero just wait around, they are the hero because they create the action and save they day.

To seem more heroic, and you don't find any zombies during the day, also it wouldn't be helpful if you re trying to runaway with all the traffic in the morning, don't you think?
