They're already front runners because they signed Adalius Thomas. He was the best player on the Raven defense and he improves a New England defense that was already far better than San Diego's and puts them on par with the Ravens. The Pats are probably the favorite right now since Norv Turner is coaching San Diego. When you take the best player from the only defense to allow fewer points than you and you've already got a better offense than said team, you're the number 1 team at the moment.
San Diego's at high risk of missing the playoffs because no rushing leader has followed up with a good year since Edgerrin James did so in his 2nd year when he repeated (got hurt the next year and didn't recover fully until 2004 or so). No rushing leader has had a 1000 yard year the next season since Jamal Lewis (and he was facing drug charges all year and hasn't been the same since). The Pats were one strategic mistake (letting Peyton Manning keep their defense on the field) away from winning a Super Bowl.
Stallworth can be injury-prone, but he's a great WR when healthy. If they sign him, they could end up 14-2 or 15-1 if he stays healthy. If he were to get hurt, Brady can still be pretty good with mediocre WRs so they'll be 13-3 or at worst 12-4 again.

Stallworth has had problems in the past with his attitude. He is a complainer. Its why the Saints allowed him to go. The Patriots season or team strength next season will not be help nor hindered with the addition of Stallworth.

The Pats are quite talented, but I do not think that they will be as good, no matter who they get, as the Chargers. The Chargers are returning most of their core players, especially on O line. LT is a beast that has produced incredibly over the last 6 years. Even if he does not match this years performance, he is bound to continue his streak.
Philip Rivers has a full year of admirable performance and will only do better with that experience.
Yes, the Pats did shore up their D with Thomas, but the Chargers were already better overall.
I believe that the Pats will most likely follow the Colts into the playoffs.

Stallworth has too many problems and has not played a full season in years, he is not the answer. Even in Philadelphia he could not stay and be a number one or two reciever. So far no one is really beating down his door. He is lacking heart.
