My girlfriend states that her mother told her years ago that putting a glass container with hot food in the refrigerator will break the glass shelves in the refrigerator. I have tried to explain to her that this is redicilous and that pyrex and glass shelves in a refrigerator will not break. The stew was not even very hot and I put the pyrex bowl on two plastic tupperwear covers. I think there is absolutely no way anything could break. Please explain to me here so she can see it that she is way off base on this. Thank you.

If it's cool enough that it's not breaking the Pyrex bowl, then I don't see how it could possibly be hot enough to break a glass shelf in the fridge. If you put something REALLY hot on the cold shelves in the fridge, then I guess you could conceivably break one, but the scenario you're describing tells me that it's not nearly enough heat to cause any damage.

Not likely it will crack either the bowl or the shelf. The main problem with doing this is that the hot product will warm up the frig and the other products in it. The warm/hot product will also cause moisture to form on the surface of the hot product and any others in the frig.

Well, Pyrex is made to stand up against hot & cold temperatures, so I don't ever see that happening; plus I've done the same thing with my Pyrex bowls and it has never happened, sorry hun your bf is right on this one.

It might be better to wait until after it has cooled for best results. It also better as there is less chance of bacteria growing.
