pain in the but. actually you would make more if you donate the stuff to goodwill, However, you also must file taxes (long form), to qualify for the deductions

I hope never to do it again. Where I live there are many thieves and people who want something for nothing. If you live in a nicer town. get 20 dollars worth of change and keep it on your person. List and alphabetize all the items for sale with their intended price. Also have a bottom line price and mark things off as they sell. Mark prices on items with pieces of tape. Do not accept checks or hold items with partial payment. Post a No Refunds/Sold As Is. sign.Do not let strangers into your home. Work on presentation of your sale items with Tables or cardboard boxes grouped together. Ask your neighbors if they would like to sell anything and take 10% of the price with their knowledge. Be prepared to move things into the garage should it rain. Buyers must transport items themselves. Run the sale with 2 people for potty breaks and other needs Post signs if permitted near busy streets and in the paper. Have specific times that this sale will occur so people don't show up at 4 am. Give items that couldn't be sold to charity as a gesture of gratefulness and good will. Have a specific plan for the money obtained. Have fun and be safe.

First thing you will want to do it to get people to stop. You do this with signs and putting the nicest items up front. Next price and label the items for sale. If you over price things people will just leave. We have yard sales to raise money for St. Jude every year so we advertise on radio station, with signs, and in local newspapers about 2 weeks before we have the sale. It is important that you choose a location that is well populated and as much traffic as possible. It is also important that it is in a place that there is safe parking for the cars. Good Luck and Have Fun with it.

I haven't had a yard sale but have seen people who have . You will need to advertise the week before the actual "weekend even cause LOTS OF FOLKS GET UP EARLLLLLLLLLLLY AND WILL ARRIVE AT YOUR HOME FOR THOSE QUICK BUYS. YOU WILL NEED TO GO BUY THE NEWSPAPER PLACE TOO AND PICK UP A KIT FOR THAT SALE TO PUT THOSE FLYERS AND SUCH ON THOSE TELEPHONE POLES AND OTHER AREAS TOO. GOOD LUCK IN YOUR SALES .ALSO CALL AND INVITE YOUR FRIENDS TO HELP KEEP AN EXTRA EYE OUT ON THOSE THINGS OUTSIDE JUST INCASE YOU HAVE TO GO IN THE HOME FOR ONE REASON OR THE OTHER. AS MANY HONEST PEOPLE THERE , THERE ARE SOME NOT SO HONEST AND THINGS COULD GET GONE QUICKLY. MAKE A LIST OF THINGS SOLD TOO ALONG WITH PUTTING PRICES ON THE THINGS YOU SALE TOO JUST KEEP UP WITH ALL OF IS BEST OF ALL ADVICE.

I had a yard sale twice. Once like 15 yrs. ago and another about 10 yrs.
YOu need to put out everything neat and clean and don't overprice things. If you don't want people constantly asking you how much is this, etc. then price everything.

Be prepared, they come in packs! People all jump out at once and they WILL steal. Believe me. They have no shame.
Carry plenty of $1's and quarters, yet larger bills to break bigger bills.
If splitting the money, make sure to label everything with name tags and keep a notebook of who has earned what.
Label as much as you can with price tags.
Organize the best you can to make everything spread out to see and easier to find.
Make lunch the night before so that all you have to do is run in an grab eat to eat, there will be NO time to go inside and make food, people will be there at all times.
Be prepared for a day of exhaustion and drink plenty of water if the weather is warm. Have a good time and best of luck!

My uncle (who always helped with our sales) would put up a "hot dog stand" and sell those along with drinks. The drinks would sell pretty good, but with our big family the hot dogs were never around long enough to sell! If you try the drinks bottled water was the best.

All great answers. So you don't have to repack anything, halfway through the second day, put up half price signs out front. Whatever doesn't sell by then can be given away. If it isn't given away, call your local gleaners or mission and they will pick it up and give it to the needy.

Yes first one I had I made $750. Key is to have lots of stuff & do it over a nice weekend in spring. Price low but with enough room for those who like to barter if needed.
