Hello,

I'm new to this board and I've been searching all over on the net. My tailbone has been hurting and my biggest fear is the doctors.

Tailbone pain: bending over, Sometimes it will hurt when I sit. No tender spots. I've checked. I did pick up a heavy box at work, can that cause damage to a tailbone?

Any ideas what could I do?
Kat

I work at a private mailing company and we do a lot of lifting, bending, squatting, twisting, and we lift about 50 pounder mail sacks, would that do the trick? Sometimes the sacks are heaver than me.

If there is a pilonidal cyst, would it be very tender at the touch? Can a person tell if there is one there?

I know how you feel about doctors, me too! If it is hurting like that (happens to me all the time) it is most likely that your body is out of alinement. Try seeing a chiropractor. They are not like doctors. That helps a lot. If you don't want to do that try basic yoga stretches. Or remember that the tailbone is a reflexology point for the uterus. If your period is due that might be the cause. I hope this helps and good luck!

Try putting some warm compresses on the area, or sit in a tub of very warm water a couple times a day (be sure you're not sitting right on your tailbone on the hard tub). Take some ibuprofen or tylenol for the discomfort. If it hasn't improved some, or if it gets worse over the next 2-3 days, you'll just have to go see a doc and get an x-ray. You could have a bruise or it could be something like a pilonidal cyst. I don't think picking up a heavy box would cause pain on your tailbone.

actually it could be something as trivial as a pulled muscle near the tailbone or possibly a bruised tailbone.....
If that is the case there really isn't anything a doctor could do for you anyways.
If it is unbearably uncomfortable for you to sit then you can consider purchasing a "donut" to sit on. Its basically like a smaller innertube kind of thing that you sit on and because there is a hole in the center (again, its shaped like a donut) there won't be any pressure on your tailbone.
If the problems continues on for over a month or gets worse though, I would consider biting the bullet and seeing your doctor.

Research coccydynia/coccygodynia on the net. You will get answers there that may help you out.

My guess is there probably isn't anything you could do about it even if it was broken. Give it time and a soft cushion.
