Mally Eye lash curler( sold on qvc.com and has pink holder very cute $20.00) is great it has no side bars so you can get very close to your short lashes and curl them before mascara(also uae a curling mascara) To make the curl last use your blowdryer to warm up the curler it helps.

Heating the curler does work well. Whether you heat the curler first or not, curl your lashes first without mascara, then apply one good coat of mascara, curl the lashes again, and finally, use your mascara wand to get as close to the base of the lashes as possible and just wiggle the wand into the base of the lashes, use tiny side to side wiggly motion while pushing up gently so that you're pushing the lashes upward, you should get good results. I've worked as a makeup artist for many years, it's the best method i've found so far. Be sure to get extra pads for your curler and don't forget to change them, those pads can be a major source of infection if not clean due to bacteria, but if clean they are a great tool. Curling after applying mascara will ruin the pads more quickly, and when you curl them with mascara on be careful to see that it is mostly dry before you do, if the mascara is still very wet, the lashes can stick to the pads and get pulled or broken off. Last thought, I promise... If you prefer a more natural look, for daytime, maybe school or something, and don't want a ton of mascara on your eyes, do the same process with a clear mascara. You can even do the process with clear, but when done, sweep one very light coat of mascara, brown is usually fairly natural, onto the lashes to add just a little color. For anyone out there who might want a super-mega dramatic look with extreme curl and volume, I have a tip, but I don't suggest you use this often, it can break your lashes to do regularly... after you are thru the process of curling, use the wand at the base still, but also add another coat of mascara, allow to dry COMPLETELY, and then (here it is) spray your curler with a thin coat of hairspray and quickly curl the lashes again. (Quick because the spray dries fast.) This will hold the curl and keep the mascara from smearing. I recommend it for special occasions, weddings, prom, where you're wanting something extreme. Just dont overuse this one.

I don't have long eyelashes but Shu Uemura's eyelash curlers work the best.
From the magazines I've read, they say you should heat the curlers a bit with hair dryer (make sure not to get it too hot so you won't hurt yourself) and then curl your lashes.
Apply mascara, and curl them again.

I believe it's acceptable to curl your eyelashes after applying mascara, it'll get the curler dirty, but you can clean it off, and the mascara will act as hairspray.

Heyy
I use eye lash curlers and all you do to make it last longer is to put it under your hair dryer for about 5 seconds be careful for the top part of your eyes cos you might burn but just use it normal and it works !
I hope I helped
