Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) was one of the major gold mines in India and is located in the Kolar district in Karnataka, close to the city of Bangalore. It was closed in the 2003 due to reducing deposits and increasing costs. The mine is considered the world's second deepest gold mine.

The quantity of gold yield have come down. The recovery of the gold was not even sufficient to meet the expenses. Therefore our Government has decided to close the Kolar gold mine.

The closure of the mines has given rise to a lot of issues, from unemployment to social unrest. The cyanide dumps that have been deposited there since the beginning of mines are causing environmental hazard.
